Try To…. Forgive And Forget

Have you ever gotten crossed up with a friend or someone at church or work? Maybe even a family member? When it happens, it’s tough.
Maybe someone offended you… said something that hurt you… or they left you out of something and you haven’t forgiven them. Something like that hurts… I understand… I’ve been there a time or two myself. And, if we aren’t careful, we can stay there. But we shouldn’t.
In the book of Philemon, the apostle Paul is writing a letter to a man that he knew well. Philemon had a slave, Onesimus, who had run away and Paul encountered him and led him to the Lord. But now Onesimus wanted to go back to Philemon but he was concerned that Philemon might not forgive him. So, Paul writes a letter to Philemon and Paul appeals to him to forgive Onesimus. Paul writes, “If he has wronged you in any way, or owes you anything, charge that to my account” (Philemon 18).
Paul is pleading with Philemon to forgive Onesimus and then, essentially says, “Philemon, if you have trouble doing this, you owe me one.”
Is there someone you need to forgive? Is there a hurt you have been carrying around for a while and you need to turn it loose?
I encourage you, if you need to forgive someone, do it. Turn it loose. As you long as you hang onto it, it will cause your blood to boil and it will affect your Christian walk.
Now, you may say, “But the person who hurt me hasn’t even come to me and asked for forgiveness.” I understand.. That person may not even think they have done anything wrong. But, you don’t need to live your life waiting on someone else to say “I’m sorry.”
Recently I was reading John Maxwell’s book, “No Limits.” In it he has a quote that I love. It’s from a man named Nick Vujicic. The quote reads; “Don’t put your life on hold while you dwell on past hurts.”
That is strong! I encourage you, if you need to, grant forgiveness today and move on with life.
