Use Wisdom In Building A Home

Years ago, I was visiting with a man in Vancleave, MS. This man was one of the leaders of FBC Vancleave, of which I was Pastor at the time. I mentioned a house that I passed on my way to his home. It was a large house. The man said, “I don’t think there’s a lot of love in that house.”
I remember thinking; “that is sad.” It was a large house. From the outside you would think it had all the modern conveniences that a home would have. It had plenty of room. But evidently, there wasn’t much love in the house.
That can also be said of other houses. Just because a home is large or has all the modern conveniences, doesn’t mean it’s filled with love. In fact, some of us may have grown up in homes that wasn’t very large or didn’t have some conveniences other houses did but, we would say, “our home was filled with love.”
In Proverbs 24:3, the Bible says, “By wisdom a house is built And by understanding it is established. And by knowledge the rooms are filled With all precious and pleasant riches.”
Think about that verse… “By wisdom a house is built…” A house is not just brick and mortar. A house becomes a home when it’s filled with love… when it’s filled with grace… when there is a reverence for God.
What would be wise to make sure our house has?
It should be filled with love. A house can be small… several kids could sleep in the same room… but love can fill a house regardless of size.
It should be filled with a reverence for God. Say the blessing at meal time… make Sunday morning a time of family worship.
It should be a place of correction. Children and teenagers need instruction. That’s why God gave them Parents. Mom and Dad, we should provide direction and, when necessary, correction. I was spanked as a child… I wasn’t abused… I was spanked and I’m fifty-seven and I was not scared emotionally by being spanked. You may choose to use another method but, there needs to be some form of discipline. You are wise to correct.
As you build your house, ask the Lord wisdom and He will give it to you.
