“Where Were You When I Laid The Foundations Of The Earth?”

Pride is a sin that man may struggle with more than others. We have a tendency to think we have all the answers. We like to be able to explain everything that happens while, at times, there is no explanation. We simply have to trust God.
The book of Job is about a man, Job, who was wealthy. God allowed Satan to test Job and so, Job lost his wealth, his health and his family. Then, three men who were supposed to be friends of Job, Eliphaz, Bildad and Zophar, came to Job and tried to offer “counsel.” They held the common belief at that time that, when someone suffered, they must have sinned. But Job was a righteous man so it wasn’t his sin that caused his suffering. But, that didn’t stop these guys from offering their counsel.
So, after listening to these men, in the thirty-eighth chapter of Job, God speaks. God asks, ” Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth; tell me if you have understanding.”
In other words, God is saying, “Who are you to try to explain the mysteries of life?”
I think the Lord may ask us the same at times. As I said earlier, we have a tendency to try to explain everything that happens when, many times, we simply don’t know and it’s ok… it’s even better at times to simply say, “I don’t know.” We are human. We aren’t God… We do not know everything.
I have known lots of Christians and Pastor’s. And, one of the things I have noticed is that people can interpret a verse to mean something and they can really be adamant about it. But that verse or those verses they are interpreting can be interpreted a couple of different ways. Who am I to adamantly say that MY interpretation is the right one. We won’t know until we get to heaven.
I am not God… neither are you…. I don’t care how much you have studied.. or how many degrees you have… you aren’t God. We don’t know everything. We need to stop acting like we do. When we think we know it all, we have a problem with pride.
What God said to Job, He says to us today… “where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell me if you have understanding?” Where were we?
We didn’t exist… but God did. Let’s remind ourselves of that the next time we want to believe we have all knowledge.
