“Perplexed But Not Despairing”

About twenty years ago, I was going through a time of adversity as a Pastor. Up to that point, I had not experienced many trials. But I was going through a season of trials then.
I called up a Pastor that I greatly respected and I was expecting him to say, “Gregg, you shouldn’t face adversity. It’s not right.” But, he didn’t. Instead, he asked, “are you the first person to experience trials? Do you realize that the apostle went through tough times? And so did Daniel and David and others…Adversity comes with the turf.”
He was right… I was not the first, nor will I be the last to experience adversity. In II Corinthians 4, Paul is facing it. As Paul writes the church at Corinth he says, “We are afflicted in every way but not crushed; perplexed but not despairing; persecuted but not forsaken; struck down but not destroyed.”
Think about what Paul said… “we are afflicted in every way… but not crushed…” Paul had gone through some major persecution.
He adds, “perplexed… but not despairing…” Most of us have been perplexed at times. When one is “perplexed” they are confused… they have questions but no answers… Going through adversity does that to you.
Then Paul adds, “We are persecuted but not forsaken.” Even though we are going through tough times, God has not forsaken us.
So, if you are going through some tough times, you aren’t the first to face it. Lots of people have. And God will get you through it. He has not forsaken us.
