The Need For Wisdom In Daily Living

In one of the Indiana Jones movies, “Indy” (Harrison Ford) comes to a room where there is a table and it is filled with cups. He is in search of the holy grail. One man had selected the wrong cup and died. As “Indy” was about to choose, he was told “choose wisely.” “Indy” scans the table and finds one wooden cup. It looks like it could be the cup of a Jewish carpenter so he selects it. It was the right cup and the elderly man says, “you chose wisely.”
All of us want to choose wisely. Every day we have decisions to make and choices to make. Some, make foolish choices… foolish decisions and it costs them. Others choose wisely and they are blessed.
In Romans 16:19, Paul says “I want you to be wise in what is good and innocent in what is evil.” As I did my Bible reading this morning, that verse just stood out… “wise in what is good and innocent in what is evil.”
Paul is concluding Romans and, as he does in other epistles, he is giving some final words of advice. He challenges the people to be “wise in what is good.”
Think about that… “wise in what is good..” In other words, Paul is challenging the people to be wise… to exercise wisdom. Every day we make choices… we need to pray for wisdom to choose wisely.
Now, someone may ask, “Ok, where do I get wisdom?”
James 1:5 says, “But if any of you lacks wisdom let him ask of God who gives to all generously and without reproach.” God grants us wisdom.
But Paul also challenges them to be “innocent in what is evil.” In other words… don’t practice evil.. don’t get wrapped up in doing evil. Live in such a way that if someone accuses you of evil, others will say “No… he or she is a good person… they are innocent in evil.”
Today, ask the Lord to give you wisdom… in order that you can make wise choices and be innocent regarding evil.
