“Weary… Yet Pursuing”

“Pistol” Pete Maravich is an LSU legend. He was a great basketball player who went on to play with the NBA Hawks, Jazz and Celtics. A movie has been made about this life and is shown on the SEC Network. I’ve seen in it’s entirety once and last night, I saw the end of it.
“Pistol” Pete was a legend… great scorer.. .great athlete… great ball-handler… but “Pistol” Pete grew tired… tired of the expectations people had of “Pistol” Pete. In one picture of him, a writer commented that if you look at Pete’s eyes… he looked like he was carrying a burden.
Pete had 2 sons and both of them grew weary of the expectations on them as Pete Maravich’s sons. One of the boys said, “I am physically, spiritually and emotionally drained from this name.”
“Physically, spiritually and emotionally drained…” Have you ever been there? Someone may say, “That’s where I am now…”
In Judges 8:4, Gideon, the judge of Israel, was leading Israel into battle. The Bible says of Gideon… “weary yet pursuing….” Gideon and his army were tired yet, they were pursuing. They were battle-weary but, they were pursuing.
“Weary yet pursuing…” Those three words spoke to me this morning. That’s a description of lots of people today… “weary… yet pursuing…”
Lots of people are tired from battling addiction… yet they are pressing on.
Lots of people are tired of seemingly never having enough money to go around… yet they press on… taking what they have somehow “making do.”
Some are tired of a job where they are surrounded people who are tough to work with…. yet they press on…
Some are just hanging in… trying to make a tough marriage work. Marriage isn’t what they had hoped it would be but, they remember their vows and they press on.
“Weary… yet pursuing…” If that describes you, hang in there. God gives us enough strength for today.
An old poem reads…
“God hath not promised skies always blue
Flower-strewn pathways all our lives through;
God hath not promised sun without rain,
Joy without sorrow, peace without pain.
But God hath promised strength for the day,
Rest for the labor, light for the way,
Grace for the trials, help from above.
Unfailing sympathy, undying love.”
“Pistol” Pete gave his life to Christ…. and Jesus gave him strength.. He will do the same for us..
If you are “weary… yet pursuing…” Hang in there… God gives us strength for the day and tomorrow, He will give us strength for it.
