Don’t Make Impulsive Decisions

Have you ever done something impulsively and later realized you made a mistake? I have and you likely have as well. When we are making decisions, we should think about it and pray about it before making a decision, we should pray about it and think about it.
Proverbs 13:5 says, “Wise people think before they act; fools don’t—and even brag about their foolishness.” Think about verse… the writer is saying we should think something through before taking action.. as opposed to doing something hasty… something impulsive… and regretting it later.
I new a man once who said that when he was considering making a major purchase he made himself think about it for a week. Why? If after a week, he had thought it through and he could afford it, he knew it wasn’t impulsive and he would make the purchase. On the other hand, if he waited a week… if it was an impulsive decision, he knew he should not make the purchase.
Now, I know there are times when we have to make a quick or quicker decision. When those times come, we must lean on the principles of Scripture that we know. But, most of our decisions will not have to be made quick… most of the time, we will be able to think something through.
So, be careful in making decisions. Don’t act impulsively…. think it through… sleep on it…. pray it through and wait for direction from the Lord.
