How are we supposed to treat our enemies? Some people would say “….. on them….I hope they get what’s coming to ’em.” But, God gives us a new way…a tougher way to deal with our enemies.
God tells Israel, “If you come across your enemy’s ox or donkey wandering off, be sure to return it. If you see the donkey of someone who hates you fallen down under its load, do not leave it there; be sure you help them with it” (Exodus 23:4-5).
Those instructions were very different from what they had done. In the past, you might get even with your enemy. You certainly didn’t help them.
But God is telling His people they are to be different. Is there someone that has hurt you? Someone you don’t care for? Someone you would like to get even with? Instead of getting even, we should help them if they need help.
Now, you may say, “There ain’t no way I can do that.” In your strength, you can’t. But with the Lord’s Help you can.
But why does God tell us to do this? He does because if we help our enemies, we are showing them love they have never seen before. We are pointing them to our Lord.
So, ask the Lord to give us the strength to help our enemies rather than hurt them.
Do not deny justice to your poor people Exodus 23:4-5
