When We Delight In The Lord.. God Gives Us Our Heart’s Desires

A theology that is popular today is referred to as “name it and claim it” theology. “Name it and claim it” is popular among several televangelists. The idea is that God wants to bless you so, just pick out something you want, ask God to give to you, and watch it happen.”
You want a new car? Ok, tell the Lord and believe that God will give it to you and it’s done.
You want a new house? Same thing.
You want more money? Same thing.
And, there are scriptures that are used as “proof-text” for this theology but, these scriptures are taken out of context. One of them is Psalms 20:4. The Psalmist says, “May he grant your heart’s desires and make all your plans succeed.”
Look at the words, “May he grant your heart’s desires…” Ok, so if my heart’s desires are a new car is God going to give it to me?
What about a new house?
You get the idea…
God can do whatever God wants to do and God can give us a house, or a car or money or whatever. But, that’s not what this text means. When the Psalmist prays, “May he grant your heart’s desires…” it wasn’t intended as a blank check. God will give us the desires of our heart WHEN, our heart’s desires are God’s desires.
Psalms 37:4 says, “Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart.” Notice the word “delight.” When we “delight” in the Lord, we want to be in the center of God’s will.. we want what God wants for our lives. So, when our desires are God’s desires and we delight ourselves in the Lord, yes, God does give us the desires of our heart because our desires are God’s desires.
So, delight yourself in the Lord and you will be content with whatever God gives you.
