The Pain Of Christmas

“It’s the most wonderful time of the year!”
With the kids jingle belling
And everyone telling you be of good cheer
It’s the most wonderful time of the year
It’s the hap-happiest season of all
With those holiday greetings and gay happy meetings
When friends come to call
It’s the hap-happiest season of all.”
You are familiar with that old Andy Williams song. It speaks of the joy… the happiness… that Christmas brings… Or does it? Does Christmas bring joy and happiness, that is?
For some, Christmas is tough. There are some who are struggling this Christmas season. Money is tight… maybe even non-existent. They will not be able to purchase their kids anything because they don’t have the money. It bothers them… they want to be good parents and they feel like they are failing their kids but… there is nothing they can do about it. They simply don’t have the money. They almost wish you could press a button and they could skip Christmas.
For others, they have the money, that’s not a problem. But this past year they lost a loved one. Maybe a spouse… a parent… a child.. a friend… and this will be the first Christmas without them. They aren’t looking forward to it.
For others, they have just gone through a divorce and this will be the first Christmas they won’t wake up in the same home as their kids on Christmas day. They aren’t looking forward to it.
Christmas can be a tough season of the year. For them, it’s not the most wonderful time of the year. If you are hurting this Christmas season… Jesus knows your pain. There is no medication you can take to make things better. We simply get up every day and press on.. step by step… Does it hurt? Yes. Do you wish you could press fast forward and forward through Christmas? Yes, but you can’t. Ask the Lord for help and He will grant it.
On the flip side, I encourage anyone who reads this to be sensitive to people around you who are hurting. There may be someone you know from church for whom Christmas is tough. Maybe you have a neighbor that is going through a tough tie. Be sensitive to people you can help.. It’s not the most wonderful time for everyone. Be aware of that and help as you can.
