Getting Rid Of The Old… Putting On The New

The United States of America is declining morally and spiritually. Do you need proof?
First, the home is crumbling.
Many church buildings are about fifty percent full.
Profanity is accepted today. Some of you will remember when Clark Gable uttered, “Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a d….” Clark was MILD compared to the language used today. We are accepting things today that are wrong but they are accepted because well, “that’s just the way it is.” But, is that the way it’s supposed to be? How have we gotten to this point?
It is my firm conviction that one of the reasons we are in this mess is that Christians have lowered the standard for living the Christian life. I’m not perfect… just like you. But, there is a standard for Christian living and it’s been lowered.
In the book of Ephesians, the apostle Paul said, “With the Lord’s authority I say this: Live no longer as the Gentiles do, for they are hopelessly confused. Their minds are full of darkness; they wander far from the life God gives because they have closed their minds and hardened their hearts against him. They have no sense of shame. They live for lustful pleasure and eagerly practice every kind of impurity” (Ephesians 4:17-20).
Notice Paul said, “Live no longer as the Gentiles do…” The Gentiles were the pagans. The Christians Paul was writing to had been pagans but now, they were Christians yet, they were continuing to live like they did in the past. Paul says, “…that isn’t what you learned about Christ.” Then Paul adds, “Since you have heard about Jesus and have learned the truth that comes from him, throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which is corrupted by lust and deception.”
Notice Paul said, “… throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life….”
Christians… we are not perfect… we are all sinners saved by grace but, when we give our lives to Christ, there should be a change in our lives. Has there been a change in our behavior?
America could begin to change if Christians live the Christian life. I don’t mean being judgmental… I mean letting the love of Jesus transform our lives.
So, are you still living like you used to? Do you like the old way you lived but you just wanted a fire insurance policy so you asked Jesus into your heart?
We need to live holy lives. Join me in setting aside things that were important to us in the past and live for Christ.
