“It Is Finished!”

When you pay something off, you feel good. You feel like a weight has been lifted off your shoulders. And this is especially true if it’s a debt you have had for a while.
Mankind had a sin debt. And it was a debt we could never pay off. It wouldn’t matter if we had doubled our payments, tripled them or even paid four or five at a time; the debt was never going to be paid off. But, thank the Lord, Jesus paid it off for us!
The Bible says that while Jesus was on the cross, He spoke seven times. Toward the end of the six hours Jesus was on the cross, He cried out, “It is finished” (John 19:30)! What did Jesus mean when He made this statement?
The word that is used here is a banking term. It means “the debt has been paid.” So, if a person owed something and they made the final payment, they no longer had a debt… it was paid in full.
When Jesus said, “It is finished,” He had paid man’s sin debt. Man could have never paid it off, but Jesus did what man couldn’t do.
Today, you can take the coupon book that used to payments for your sin debt and you can throw it away. The debt is paid! And because our sin debt is paid, we should love and serve the Lord Jesus.
There is an old hymn we’ve sung for years;
“Jesus paid it all, All to Him I owe.
Sin had left a crimson stain, He washed it white as snow.”
Our debt has been paid. Thank the Lord today.
