God Knows Our Hearts And Our Thoughts

God knows our hearts. God knows our thoughts. A good example of this is the story of Moses striking a rock in the Old Testament.
The people of Israel were complaining about having no food and no water. So, Moses and Aaron went to God asking for a solution. God told Moses to strike a rock and water would flow from it.
So, Moses took the staff and hit the rock twice and the Israelites had water. Ok, everything looks good, right? Not necessarily. God tells Moses and Aaron that they will not enter the promised land because they didn’t believe God could bring water from the rock.
When you read the text, nothing indicates that Moses didn’t believe God could bring water from the rock. The text read, “Listen, you rebels!… “Must we bring you water from this rock?” Then Moses raised his hand and struck the rock twice with the staff, and water gushed out. So the entire community and their livestock drank their fill” (Numbers 20:10-11).
There is nothing there that indicates Moses didn’t believe but evidently, down deep in his heart, he didn’t. God could see that and punished Moses.
There are two applications from this story. First, it is a remember that sin is offensive to God. Moses was a great leader but, he sinned and he would be punished. It’s a reminder that all of us are accountable to God.
It’s also a reminder of the grace of God. Thank the Lord God isn’t still punishing us based on the degree of our faith. I know I wouldn’t pass the test.
None of us are perfect…not by a long-shot… But we need to try to keep our thoughts and hearts and pure before God.
