Whether you are religious or not, most people are familiar with the Ten Commandments. God gave Moses the Ten Commandments for the people of Israel to follow in daily living. They are an excellent guide for us.
In the gospel of Matthew, Jesus took the Ten Commandments and summed them up beautifully. A Pharisee came to Jesus and asked Him what the greatest commandment was? Jesus said, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul and mind.” Then, Jesus added, “…you shall love your neighbor as yourself” (Matthew 22:36-40).
In that statement, Jesus summed up the Ten Commandments. I’ve seen a few churches that have summed them up even more for the purpose of a mission statement with this.. “Love God… Love people.” That’s an excellent summary.
Let’s break down the Ten Commandments and see how that phrase sums them up so well.
The 1st commandment says, “You shall no other Gods before Me…”
Second commandment… “You shall not make for yourself an idol…”
Third commandment… “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain…”
Fourth commandment… “Remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy…”
“Honor your father and mother…”
“You shall not murder…”
“You shall not commit adultery…”
“You shall not steal..”
“You shall not bear false witness…”
“You shall not covet…”
So… Love God and you take care of the first four commandments. Love people and you take care of the final six.
Today, join me in Loving God and Loving people.
