Everyone Needs Encouragement

jackie-robinson-pee-wee-reese      This world can be a tough place. Sometimes, people grow up in a tough home environment and they don’t receive the love and support they should receive. Sometimes, people make mistakes and they need some help and encouragement getting back on their feet. Most people, need some help from someone at some point in their lives.
In the book of Exodus, there is a story of a time when Israel went into battle against the Amalekites. As the battle was taking place, Moses held up his staff. As long as he held up his staff, the Israelites were winning. But, when Moses’s arms grew tired and they began to drop, the battle went the way of the Amalekites. So, when Moses’ hands were up, Israel was winning; when Moses hands began to drop, the Amalekites were winning.
Recognizing this, Aaron and Hur found a stone for Moses to sit on. Then they stood on each side of Moses and held up his hands. As they did this, Joshua and the Israaelite army overwhelmed the army of Amalek.
That is a beautiful picture of encouragement. Moses needed help holding his arms up. Aaron and Hur could have just stood there and said, “Well, I ain’t helping him… We can just lose the battle, for all I care.” But instead, they helped Moses and Israel won the battle.
There is probably someone you know who needs some help holding their hands up… someone who is struggling some. Help them out! Hold their arms up for a while. Offer a word of encouragement. Maybe give them some money if that’s what they need. Buy their lunch.
As I said earlier, this world can be a tough place. We all need help every now and then.
The movie “42” is about Jackie Robinson breaking the color barrier in Major League Baseball. In one scene, the Dodgers are playing in Louisville, I believe and Pee Wee Reese, the Dodgers shortstop, has gotten mail from his family and friends that they don’t want him to play with this black guy. At the start of the game, the crowd is booing Jackie Robinson. Pee Wee Reese runs over and puts his arm around Jackie Robinson. He does this to tell everyone in the stands that he supports Jackie. He and Jackie are teammates and friends.
There may be someone you need to put your arm around today. Someone needs encouragement. Let the Lord use you to encourage them.
