Keep Your Priorities Straight This Christmas

The Christmas season is a fun and festive time of the year. I love it. I love the music, the color and the spirit of Christmas. But, we have to be careful because, although we may not intend to, we can forget about the real reason for Christmas. It’s easy to forget about our priorities.
The people of Haggai’s day forgot their priorities. The people of Israel had been allowed to return home after seventy years of exile. Upon returning home they began rebuilding the temple. But, the work stopped. The foundation of the temple lay bare for years. Until the prophet Haggai came along.
Haggai basically called Israel out. Haggai asked; “Why are you living in luxurious houses while my house lies in ruins? This is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies says: Look at what’s happening to you! You have planted much but harvest little. You eat but are not satisfied. You drink but are still thirsty. You put on clothes but cannot keep warm. Your wages disappear as though you were putting them in pockets filled with holes!”
Haggai didn’t mince words! He told them straight! Now, you might be asking, “what does this have to do with Christmas?” Well, it has everything to do with Christmas.
You see, while we know what Christmas is all about, we can easily, easily, lose focus on the priorities of Christmas. We get wrapped up in the hustle and bustle and we don’t take time to read the Christmas story.
Keep your priorities straight.         Don’t lose sight of them. Read the Christmas story with your family. Reach out to the needy this Christmas.
Don’t neglect the temple of God while you are building your own house. Stay focused on Jesus who is THE reason for the season!
