Are You A Christian? “Yeah, Something Like That”

Yesterday, on my way to work, I went through the drive-thru at Burger King. I chatted a little with the guy in the window.
I asked, “How are you?”
He replied, “Oh, I’m hanging in… that’s about all anyone can do, isn’t it?”
I said, “Well, you have a job… and you woke up on this side of the dirt.”
He replied, “Yeah, that’s something to be thankful for.”
I said, “Buddy…just asking… are you a Christian?”
He said, “Yeah… something like that.”
As he said that, he handed me my food and I had to go.
I thought about what he said… “Yeah, something like that.”
What did he mean?
Now someone reading this is thinking, “Gregg… he was just trying to get you to move on… He’s not into religion” and you are probably right.
But think about what he said… “Yeah…. something like that.”
My guess is, he believes in God… or thinks he does… he believes in Christ… but he’s not sure about religion. He probably tries to be kind to others… tries to help others.. thinking that’s the right way to live. And, he probably is a universalist… meaning, he thinks everyone is going to heaven.
Ok.. I know… I just did a lot of pre-judging in the paragraph above. Forgive me for that… I’m just guessing at what he believes.
But here is the point… there are lots and lots of people out there who are like that guy… they don’t know… they aren’t sure…
Now, when he said, “Yeah… something like that…” I could have stopped and thrown a black Bible at him and said, “Let me tell you one thing son… Jesus loves you and Jesus is the only way to heaven!” That statement is true but it wasn’t going to work in that spot.
This world is confused.. it’s searching.. it’s looking for answers… it’s not into religion. It believes one religion is just as good as another.
But God has put us in this world to minister… to love… and hopefully help some people, like my friend at Burger King be able to say, “Yes, I am a Christian” as opposed to “Yeah… something like that.”
