God Is Our Sanctuary

Punishment is tough. For kids, punishment is maybe staying inside when everyone else gets to go to recess. For teenagers, maybe it’s being grounded and unable to go anywhere. If someone breaks the law, they are punished with prison time or other things. But there are times when, even if we are being punished, the judge or the teacher or the parent might shorten the punishment, out of the goodness of their heart.
In the book of Ezekiel, God did that very thing. The people of Israel had been punished by being carried away into exile. They were in exile because they were being punished. But God says to Israel, “… I have scattered you in the countries of the world, I will be a sanctuary to you during your time in exile.”
Think about those words… “I will be a sanctuary to you…” A sanctuary is a place of safety… a place of peace and serenity.
But remember where Israel was… they were being punished… because they had disobeyed God… and the God they disobeyed is now saying He will be their sanctuary while in exile.
I don’t know what you are facing right now… don’t know what you are going through but, perhaps you need a place of sanctuary. A place of peace and rest. You need a sanctuary and God wants to be your sanctuary.
God may want you to reach out to someone… to be sanctuary to someone. To offer to help them. To lend a hand. To be a place of peace and solace and rest.
God says to us, what He said to Israel, “… I have scattered you into the countries of the world… I will be a sanctuary to you…”
