“Sticks And Stones May Break My Bones”

“Sticks and stones may break my bones, But words will never hurt me.”
You are probably familiar with that old saying. But, it’s wrong. Yeah, I know it’s cute and all that but it’s wrong. Words can hurt us. You want proof?
You may have had someone say something to you at some point in your life… maybe it was a parent who said, “You will never amount to anything!’
Maybe a teacher said, “I’ve never had a student as dumb as you!”
Maybe a Coach said, “You aren’t any good.”
Maybe a spouse said something bad.
And, we remember those things. It could have happened forty, fifty, maybe even sixty or so years ago but you remember it. It’s because words do hurt us.
Psalms 52;4 says, “You love to destroy others with your words!”
Are you a person who loves to destroy others with your words? Are you constantly cutting other people down? If so, friend, that’s not Christ like. I encourage you to stop. We need to encourage one another instead of cutting down one another.
Maybe you have been a victim of this type of thing. Maybe someone has made some derogatory remarks about you. I know.. they can hurt and the devil can replay them in our minds. But, ask the Lord to help you take those ugly, hurtful recordings captive when they come up and don’t let them play in your minds.
Today, if you do it, don’t ridicule others. It accomplishes nothing positive.
Oh, it maybe get you a laugh or two at someone else’s expense but that’s no good.
In the movie “Bambi,” “Thumper” the rabbit said, “If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all.”
Remember that across the day.
