Living A Happier Longer Life

Physicians emphasize the need for us to live healthy lives. We are to watch our diets, get exercise, take appropriate medications and do other things that will extend our lives. In Psalm 34:12-14, the Psalmist talks about some things we should do to live a long life.
He challenges us to to keep our tongue from speaking evil, and our lips from telling lies. We are to turn away from evil and good. Search for peace and work to maintain it. I love that challenge. Let’s break it down;
“Keep our tongue from speaking evil and our lips from telling lies…” The Psalmist is saying we should guard our tongues. Think about that… it means not starting gossip and not repeating gossip. James tells us, “The tongue is a fire.” Think of the damage that has been done by a lying tongue over the years.
“Turn away from evil and do good…” Think about it… if everyone turned from evil to good, the world would be a better place.
But finally he says, “Search for peace and work to maintain it.” This is most definitely needed today. We are a country at one another’s throats. We are divided. We are angry with one another. The Psalmist says, “Search for peace…” Don’t search for division… don’t stir the pot… Instead, search for peace. How many times have you started gossip? How many times have you repeated gossip? We should guard our tongues.
So.. guard your tongue… turn away from evil and do good… search for peace and maintain it. Those things will help you live a longer life.
I heard a story about a man who had a problem with gossip. He loved to start gossip and repeat gossip. One day he found out something about a businessman in town. He wasn’t certain it was true but he repeated it any way.
When the man heard what was said about him, he felt he was ruined. He went to his Pastor and told him what was said about him. The Pastor then asked he man who repeated the gossip to come see him.
The Pastor asked the man about what was reportedly said and the man admitted he had said it and apologized. But then, the Pastor said, “I want you to do something. The Pastor said, “Do you have any feather pillows in your house?” The man replied that he did.
The Pastor said, “Bring me one.”
So, the man brought a feather pillow to the Pastor. Then, the Pastor went to a window, opened it and told the man, “cut the pillow and begin shaking it.” So, the man did and feathers went everywhere.
Then, the Pastor said, “Pick those feathers up.”
The man replied that he couldn’t possibly get all those feathers
And the Pastor said, “It’s the same with your gossip. Although you have asked for forgiveness, you can’t undo the damage that has been done.”
It is the same with us. Today, guard your tongue.
