We Will See The Goodness Of The Lord In The Land Of The Living

Back in 2010, I believe, we had just put Daddy in the Kentwood Nursing Home.  One time, I drove down to visit with him.  As we sat in his room, I began to weep as I thought about what was once, a bull of a man who had now been reduced to trembling hands because of Parkinson’s disease.  I said, “Daddy, I hate this is happening to you.”
He replied, “Man, this is part of life.”
He was right.. it is part of life. We all go through adversity. At some point in life, we all deal with death. It may be the death of a parent or a child or a friend. We also deal with sickness, maybe divorce or financial problems. Adversity is part of life.
Yet, even when we are facing adversity, we can be assured that God is on the throne and will walk with us through the tough times.
In Psalm 27, David was going through adversity. In verse one David says, “The Lord is my light and my salvation; Whom shall I fear? The Lord is the defense of my life; whom shall I dread?” David was going through some times. Yet, in spite of the tough times, David prayed confidently, “I would have despaired unless I had believed that I would see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living” (Psalm 27:13).
Think about that verse… “I would have DESPAIRED,” David said, “unless I believed that I would see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.”
This doesn’t mean we won’t suffer. It doesn’t mean we won’t face adversity. But, David is saying, when we face those things God will be with us.
That doesn’t even mean that God will change things. It simply means that God is still on the throne and God has not forgotten us.
You know, when I think about adversity, I think about Paul in a prison cell. He was able to sing hymns while sitting in a prison cell because he was confident he would see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.
I think about John, who was exiled on the island of Patmos. Yet, John was confident he would see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.
Today, whatever you are facing, God hasn’t forgotten you. God loves you. That doesn’t mean your situation will change over night… it simply means God is with us, and we will see His goodness in the land of the living.
