America: A Land Of Opportunity For Those Who Will Work

Next Monday is July the fourth. For most Americans, this weekend and next week will be a time of vacation and celebration as we celebrate our nation’s freedom. As we do, many Americans are very concerned for our nation. Some even feel that our best days are behind us. Others believe, and I am among among them, that America must have a spiritual awakening or, our nation is lost. As we think about our nation and the problems that we face, one of the problems we face is a lack of work ethic in our nation.
America is two-hundred-and-forty years old. Over that time period, hundreds of people have worked hard and built businesses. Some even became millionaires because they were willing to work hard. The American Dream is the idea that if a person is willing to work, America is a nation where a person can earn money and become successful.
But the key to that is work ethic. Across our nation today there is a lack of work ethic. Let’s not ignore the facts; we live in a time where many people want something for nothing. Some would prefer to work the system and live off of hand-outs.
Let’s make something clear; no one… and I repeat, NO ONE, has ever become successful without hard work. Someone has said “the only place success comes before work is in the dictionary.”
Someone else has said, “The helping hand you are looking for is at the end of your arm.”
Proverbs 18:9 says, “A lazy person is as bad as someone who destroys things.”
What is your work ethic like? You can still live the American Dream if you are willing to work.
Thomas Edison once said, “Opportunity is missed by many people because it’s dressed in overalls and looks like work.”
Work is good. Work is honorable. Paul said, “If a man will not work, he shall not eat” (II Thessalonians 3:10).
As we celebrate our freedom, let’s recommit ourselves to the work ethic that built America.
