Has your tongue ever gotten you into trouble? Ok, maybe you are chuckling and saying, “How many times has my tongue gotten me into trouble?” I understand. I’ve been there myself.
There are times when I say something that I shouldn’t say. There are times when I say the right thing but perhaps at the wrong time. And, there are times when I should have said something but I didn’t.
Psalm 29:1 says, “I said to myself, “I will watch what I do and not sin in what I say.
I will hold my tongue when the ungodly are around me.” I love what the Psalmist says here… “I will… not sin in what I say…” He was guarding his tongue.
Our tongues can get us into trouble so, we need to watch what we say. James said, “…among all the parts of the body, the tongue is a flaming fire” (James 3:6).
So, we need to guard our tongues. Be careful in what you say. Don’t gossip… don’t repeat gossip… don’t say hurtful things. The little children’s rhyme, “sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me” is not true. Words do hurt us. We need to watch our tongues.
