One of the keys to success in the Christian life is humility. I don’t know that we think about it much but, without humility, a person will not become a Christian and without humility a person can’t learn. The opposite of humility is arrogance… a feeling that you know everything… an unwillingness to be taught.
In the Beatitudes, Jesus begins by teaching, “Blessed are the poor in spirit.” Being poor is associated with poverty… not having things that we want. Who would want to be poor? But Jesus says “Blessed are the poor…” What He meant was blessed are those who are poor in spirit… ie… they are humble and willing to learn.
Ok, so how does a person get humility? Sometimes, a person goes through adversity and the adversity humbles them. God can humble us by convicting us of our need for Him. As we read God’s word, God can humble us as the Spirit convicts us of our sin.
This year, if you want to have a good year, you need humility. You need to be willing to learn. No one has all the answers. Everyone can learn.
“Blessed are the poor in spirit,” Jesus said, “for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”
