People... You Gotta Love 'Em

If you work with people you have no doubt discovered that people are... shall we say.. different.  That's a nice way of saying "there are some weird people in this world."

Several years ago I was talking with a Pastor friend about an individual in a church.  This person was giving me fits.  Constantly complaining, etc... As I was venting with my Pastor friend he said "They (referring to my critic) are a special American."  I laughed.  I had never heard it put that way.  Yep, they were indeed a SPECIAL American.

I've been in the ministry for thirty years.  I've met lots and lots of people.  I have made some wonderful friends and shared some special moments with some people. But, yes, there are some people that have been "challenging."  My guess is you know some "challenging" people too.

Several years ago I ran across this poem that gives us encouragement in our relationships with people.

People are unreasonable, illogical, and self-centered.
        Love them anyway.

If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish ulterior motives.
         Be kind anyway.

If you are successful, you will win some false friends and true enemies.

          Succeed anyway.

The good you do today will be forgotten tomorrow.
          Be good anyway.

Honesty and frankness will make you vulnerable.
          Be honest and frank anyway.

What you spend years building may be destroyed overnight.
          Build anyway.

People need help, but may attack you if you try to help them.
          Help them anyway.

In the final analysis, it is between you and God.
It was never between you and them anyway.

I like that poem.  In dealing with people, regardless how challenging they may be, remember that Jesus loves us all.  We should love one another and accept one another as Jesus does.
