Like Indiana Jones... Taking A Step Of Faith.
This morning I read Numbers 14 where God punished the Israelites because they didn't have faith. They wandered in the wilderness forty years because they wouldn't be obedient to God. That got me thinking about faith.
Faith is at the heart of Christianity. I mean, think about it; the whole thing is about faith.
We believe in Jesus... we've never seen Jesus but we believe Jesus is a real historical person because the Bible. which we accept by faith, says Jesus lived and we have seen the difference Jesus has made in the world. But, I have never seen Jesus but I believe He lived.
By faith we accept the virgin birth.
By faith we believe Jesus rose from the grave.
Faith is at the heart of the whole deal.
Recently, I got to thinking about the journey Holli and I have been on recently. It hit me; this is the biggest step of faith we have ever taken. This is requiring more faith than anything we have done in twenty-nine years of ministry. Looking back, every time we moved to another church field we always had an idea of what we were getting. We had met some people, we had visited the church, the community or town the church was in... so we had an idea of what we were getting. Not now. This is a major step of faith for us. We are starting from scratch. That's exciting but, it's also scary.
I believe the Lord is going to take care of us. I don't know how but I believe he will. And, Holli and I have already thought of some things we may have to cut back on or change some to make ends meet. We know that and are prepared for it... or, at least we think we are.
Church plants are heavily dependent on outside funds because you are starting from scratch. Because of that I'm in the process of raising outside funds for The Retreat. If you would like to partner with us, go to our website www.theretreatdallas.org and click the link that says "Giving."
Still, you come back to Faith. In just the short time we have been working on The Retreat, there have been some things I thought would happen that didn't and there have been some things I wasn't expecting that did happen. So, I've learned and am still learning, to try to roll with the flow. I'm not real good at that right now but I'm trying to get better.
Faith is at the very heart of the Christian life and the journey I'm on right now is requiring me to have more faith than anything I've ever done.
In the movie "Indiana Jones and The Temple of Doom" Indy is trying to get the Holy Grail. He comes to a place that APPEARS to have a wide chasm between the place Indy is standing and the place where the grail is. Indy looks at the book... it shows a person stepping into... what appears to be.. thin air...

Like anyone would be... Indy is scared.
Then, he thinks of his dad who is dying...
Then, he takes a step and his foot lands on a bridge that was there all alone but had blended in so that it couldn't be seen. Indy had to take a step of faith.
That's what we are doing. Pray for us as we do. Is there something God is calling to do in faith?
