Those apple(s) didn't fall far from the tree (s)....proud of my kids.
There is an expression that I've heard for years. It's used to describe how kids and even grandkids have traits similar to their parents and grandparents. The expression is "that apple didn't fall far from the tree." In this case, the "apples" are my two boys; Robert & Will.
But first, let me tell you a little about the tree. The "tree's" in this case would be my paternal grandfather, James Potts and my Dad, Robert Potts. Paw Paw (James) LOVED to be around people. He just didn't meet a stranger. My Daddy said of me once "If Gregg meets a stranger... they don't stay that way." I guess I inherited that from Paw Paw. Holli says I can meet someone and in 5 minutes, we will be friends. Paw Paw was like that.
Everywhere he went, people knew James Potts. My Dad, Robert is not as outgoing as Paw Paw was but, he isn't shy either. He was an insurance salesman early in his life so he had to have people skills. Then, in his 60's, he ran for and was elected to the school board. So he enjoyed meeting people as well. -
Ok... I've described the "trees." The "apples" are Robert and Will, my two sons.
Recently I met them for lunch at a fast-food restaurant near Kennessaw State. I didn't know a soul in the place... but they did. They were shaking hands and laughing with people. As I watched them, I admit, my heart filled with pride. My Paw Paw would have been so proud of them. My grandmaw would have said "that's the Potts coming out of them."
Yeah, I guess it was. The thing I was proud of is... they have made their own niche.. if you understand what I mean. In their world... Kennessaw State University... they have networked and met people and they have friends there. They are not Gregg Potts's boys there or James Potts great-great grandkids or Robert Potts grand-kids. . I can't help them there. Their family name can't help them there. I don't know anyone there. But they have helped themselves.
Am I proud of them? As Dr. Landrum Leavell used to say "You bet!"
Today Robert sent a picture of him and Governor Deal. He's doing an internship with the Governor's office this spring. As I look at that picture, I wish Paw Paw could see it. He would say "Robert has made a fine looking young man." And he has... That's the Knighton in him (Holli's side.. he looks very much like her brothers). If Daddy was himself (he has Parkinson's) he would say something similar.
The apples didn't fall far from the trees and... I'm proud of all 3 of my apples... Robert, Will & Sarah.
