It's funny till the joke's on you... watch the video of the song "Don't laugh at me" by country musician Mark Willis
Elvis used to sing a song entitled "Walk a miles in my shoes." Too often we have the tendency to "judge"
someone or make fun of someone. The song talked about the need to avoid judging others and understand
the pain and circumstances in life a person has faced.
If you have ever been laughed at you know that it hurts.
Maybe it's the kid who gets chosen LAST during P.E. when teams were being chosen for kickball or softball. You know the routine; two big athletic kids are chosen to "pick" teams... Everyone lines up like it's the NFL draft and they start picking.
The best are picked... then the next best two.. and on and on until finally, there is one kid who is just not athletic but may one day be a Rhodes Scholar... but, in elementary school, being a Rhodes Scholar isn't cool but being a good ball player is... and he's the ONLY one left and someone says "ooookaaay, come on, you are on my team." I mean, the captain is REAL enthusiastic about the unathletic kid being on his team... the poor kid., embarrassed... walks over and joins the team.
Or, it's the kid who doesn't have the money to buy fashionable clothes... They wear the best they have to school and they get made fun of.
Or, there is a young lady who get's pregnant... she chooses to have the baby and raise it but, it totally changes her life.. and... she gets made fun of..
You get the idea...
I heard a song today that speaks to this. The title of the song is "Don't laugh at me." I've put the youtube video of the song below... listen to it...
Think about these lyrics;
"Don't laugh at me, Don't call me names, Don't get your pleasure from my pain,
Someday we'll all have perfect wings, Don't laugh at me." I have always had a soft spot for the handicapped and the underdog. The church needs to be the same. Jesus loves all people.
So, don't get your laughs from making fun of someone else.
There is an old saying that is very simple but powerful; "To belittle is to BE LITTLE." Don't belittle anyone cause everyone is made in the image of God and God doesn't want us making fun of his kids.
