"We Are Family"
Saturday night I was at a wedding reception. When the band began to play they led off with the Sister Sledge hit, “We Are Family.” That song brought back lots of memories. One was of the 1979 World Series.
The Pittsburgh Pirates, which were my favorite team back then, were led by slugger Willie Stargell. I can see Stargell standing at the plate, pumping his left arm up and down waiting for a pitch. The Pirates selected the Sister Sledge hit song “We Are Family” as their theme song. And, throughout the World Series, that song blasted over the speakers of Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh.
That song touches on a longing all of us have; the desire to belong… the need for friends. There are approximately 6 billion people in this world, yet the world can be a lonely place. That’s hard to believe with all our modern technology, isn’t it?
It can make us feel rejected. One man said he was so lonely he was rejected for membership in the “Lonely Hearts Club.” That’s pretty lonely!
But, the good news is, Jesus loves us all. And, as the old song goes, “His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches Me.”
