"Delight yourself in the Lord."

I'm reading through the Bible along with others in our church and this morning I read a couple of verses that have been favorites of mine for a while.  Psalm 37:3-4 says, "Trust in the Lord, and do good; Dwell in the land and cultivate faithfulness.
Delight yourself in the Lord; And He will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord, Trust also in Him, and He will do it."

I especially like verse 3 which says "Delight yourself in the Lord; And He will give you the desires of your heart."
Some read that verse and think that God is giving us a blank check.  They focus on the latter part of the verse which reads ".... And He will give you the desires of your heart."
So, "Ok, God, this verse means you will give me anything I want...  I want a new a car... I want a flat-screen tv... I want a new job!"
But is that what God meant when he said "I will give you the desires of our heart?"
I'm afraid not.  Re-read the verse.
"Delight yourself in the Lord..."  In  other words, "Get close to the Lord... Walk with the Lord."  What happens when we get close to the Lord?  God's desires become our desires.  So, when we "delight in the Lord" God does give us the "desires of our hearts" because our desires become God's desires!
The verse is not a blank check  instead, it's God telling us to walk closely with Him and when we do, we desire God's will for our lives.
Today, "Delight yourself in the Lord."
